SIX months ago, 83-year-old Mornington Island elder Sally Gabori picked up a paint brush for the first time. Today she is the biggest-selling artist in Queensland, according to the director of the Brisbane art gallery that exhibits her work.
Painted in a crowded studio down the road from the aged persons' home in the impoverished Queensland Aboriginal community in which she lives, her "magical" and distinctive contemporary works fetch up to $5000 each.
Those prices are expected to rise later this year when her work reaches the galleries of Sydney and Melbourne.
"We get a lot of people in here who are quite critical about Australian art in general but they look at her work and they just love it," Wollongabba Art Gallery director Alex Shaw said.
"In such a short time she's become an established artist ... she's gone from being a no one to an established artist in less than six months when it takes most emerging artists up to 10 years ... It's quite amazing."
